Renowned radiobiology expert with 40+ years of experience developing medical countermeasures

Dr. Thomas J. MacVittie serves as a Radiation Research Consultant at Ceramedix, Inc. A renowned radiobiology expert, he advises on Ceramedix’s DoD-funded radiological medical countermeasures work and supporting its translation towards the clinic.

With over 40 years of academic and government research experience, Dr. MacVittie is widely recognized for his studies on hematopoietic and gastrointestinal radiation injury and advancement of novel interventions. He is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Previously, he was Chairman and Project Leader of the Experimental Hematology Department at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI), where he also served as Chief of the Hematology Division and as a Research Physiologist. Throughout his tenure, Dr. MacVittie has made significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of radiation-induced injuries, particularly through the development of medical countermeasures. His vast body of research showing cytokine-induced recovery of hematopoiesis after irradiation supported the clinical studies that led to FDA approval of Neupogen and Neulasta as treatments for hematopoietic acute radiation syndrome (ARS).

Dr. MacVittie has served as an advisor to the WHO Collaborating Centers in Radiation Emergency Medical Preparedness and Assistance and has been involved with radiation research study groups at NATO. He has contributed to numerous influential committees and working groups, including the CDC Strategic National Stockpile Radiation Working Group and the International Council on Radiation Protection’s Task Group on “Radiation Effects on Normal Tissue.” His expertise is widely recognized, and he has served on the editorial boards of journals such as Experimental Hematology and Stem Cells. Additionally, Dr. MacVittie was invited by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to serve on the inaugural National Biodefense Science Board Federal Advisory Committee from 2007 to 2011. He has published 240 peer-reviewed manuscripts, organized seven complete issues of the Health Physics Journal, 2012-2021, with 76 total publications focused on radiation effects, animal models, medical countermeasure development, biomarkers, and the FDA Animal rule, in addition to 48 book chapters, and co-edited 5 books from international meetings on radiation effects and treatment ARS. Dr. MacVittie holds MS and PhD degrees in radiation biology from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo.
