Esteemed ophthalmologist with over 30 years of experience developing interventions for diabetic retinal diseases

Dr. Lloyd Paul Aiello serves as a member of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Board at Ceramedix, Inc. As an esteemed ophthalmologist and researcher, he plays a pivotal role in guiding the company’s scientific development initiatives and strategic decision-making processes.

Dr. Aiello brings over 30 years of experience as a physician scientist, conducting landmark phase 1-3 clinical trials for diabetic retinal diseases and identifying novel treatment targets. He is Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, where he also serves as Vice Chair for Centers of Excellence and Director of the Diabetic Eye Disease Center of Excellence. Additionally, he is the Director of the Beetham Eye Institute of Joslin Diabetes Center (JDC), Head of the Section of Eye Research (JDC), Vice President of Ophthalmology at JDC, and Inaugural Chair of the National Eye Institute Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Retina Network. His research focuses on understanding mechanisms of diabetic retinopathy progression and developing novel interventions. Notably, his early research contributed to the widespread clinical use of VEGF inhibitors for treating diabetic macular edema. Dr. Aiello has also led rigorous clinical trials on therapeutic interventions for diabetic retinal diseases, including protein kinase C beta inhibitors, intraocular steroids, and laser photocoagulation techniques.

Dr. Aiello has served on several editorial and review boards, as well as on major committees and initiatives, such as the Albert & Mary Lasker Foundation International Retinal Research Foundation Initiative for Innovation in Vision Science. His innovative research has been recognized with over 75 national and international awards, including the Alcon Research Institute Award, the ARVO/Pfizer Ophthalmics Translational Research Award and a co-recipient of the The António Champalimaud Vision Award. He has authored more than 360 publications in high-profile journals. Dr. Aiello received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and both his MD and PhD from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins University and Hospital.
